Gr\u00e9goire l\u2019Illuminateur est situ\u00e9e au centre du village d\u2019Aratents [\u00c7ak\u0131nl\u0131]. Selon la tradition populaire arm\u00e9nienne, le combat de Hayk et Abel aurait eu lieu sur ce site. Au si\u00e8cle dernier, des voyageurs ont d\u00e9chiffr\u00e9 une inscription arm\u00e9nienne grav\u00e9e sur une plaque de couleur grise ins\u00e9r\u00e9e dans le mur d\u2019une habitation. Malgr\u00e9 nos recherches, nous ne l\u2019avons pas trouv\u00e9e, elle portait une inscription et la date de 1663, probablement l\u2019ann\u00e9e de construction de l\u2019\u00e9glise. Lors de notre visite, nous n\u2019avons trouv\u00e9 aucune trace de ce monument, sur son emplacement une habitation a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite. Des pierres tombales et des khatchkars dat\u00e9s entre le XIVe et le XIXe si\u00e8cle se trouvaient dans le cimeti\u00e8re, mais nous n\u2019avons pas pu mener plus avant nos recherches. Le village jadis peupl\u00e9 d\u2019Arm\u00e9niens a constamment subi les pers\u00e9cutions et les pillages des populations locales entre 1881 et 1896. Il \u00e9tait jadis tr\u00e8s \u00e9tendu et faisait l\u2019objet de nombreuses superstitions. Le village poss\u00e8de une \u00e9glise du nom de Surb Lousaworitch, dont voicil\u2019inscription\u00a0: <em>\u00ab\u00a0En l\u2019an 1663, cette \u00e9glise a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite par le pieux Yakob pour sa femme Aghabek, son p\u00e8re Isray\u0113l et Ter Krikor\u00a0\u00bb.<\/em> Ce village \u00e9tait habit\u00e9 par des familles patriarcales renomm\u00e9es, parmi lesquelles nous pouvons mentionner \u00ab Baron Nanig Garab\u00e9d \u00bb et sa parent\u00e9 dont les pierres tombales se trouvent dans le cimeti\u00e8re du village. La prosp\u00e9rit\u00e9 de ce village est due aux riches et nombreux vergers qu\u2019il poss\u00e9dait. Leurs pommiers \u00e9taient si abondants, qu\u2019au moment de la cueillette, les pommes obstruaient les ruisseaux des alentours. Aujourd\u2019hui, il n\u2019y a ni habitants, ni vergers, ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 victimes des caprices destructeurs et des crimes des barbares qui les entouraient. La petite \u00e9glise du Saint-Illuminateur est creus\u00e9e en profondeur et son sol est tr\u00e8s humide. Tous les sept ans, une eau noire suinte du sol et inonde l\u2019\u00e9glise qui se transforme en mare. L\u2019\u00e9glise est alors inutilisable jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce l\u2019eau se retire lentement. On rapporte que lorsque le Shah de Perse T\u2019ahmaz envahit la contr\u00e9e avec son arm\u00e9e, le seigneur du village Melik\u2019 Karapet, avec sa parent\u00e8le et les villageois mit en \u0153uvre un astucieux stratag\u00e8me pour se prot\u00e9ger de l\u2019envahisseur. \u00c0 cette p\u00e9riode, une grande famine r\u00e9gnait dans le pays et l\u2019arm\u00e9e persane en souffrait gravement, alors que les greniers du village \u00e9taient remplis de toutes sortes de c\u00e9r\u00e9ales. Melik\u2019 Karapet fit pr\u00e9parer sept chariots de galettes de pain \u00e0 base de bl\u00e9, d\u2019orge, de seigle et de millet et les fit conduire devant l\u2019arm\u00e9e perse. Lorsque le g\u00e9n\u00e9ral les vit, il demanda au chef de village quel \u00e9tait leur contenu, il r\u00e9pondit en turc \u00ab Nan\u00eb ga \u00bb (petits pains). Le g\u00e9n\u00e9ral tr\u00e8s satisfait dit au seigneur arm\u00e9nien : \u00ab Que ton nom soit dor\u00e9navant Nanig \u00bb. Depuis ce jour, le nom de cet homme devint Nanig Garabed, et son village s\u2019appelle en turc \u00ab Nanig K\u00f6y \u00bb et en arm\u00e9nien \u00ab Haratents \u00bb. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 cette action, il put pr\u00e9server le village des exactions persanes. Mais lorsque les Perses se retir\u00e8rent, le village fut victime des repr\u00e9sailles du despotique \u00ab Gogtcha Sultan \u00bb, qui si\u00e9geait \u00e0 la citadelle de Van. Ce barbare sanguinaire s\u2019\u00e9tait rebell\u00e9 contre les Perses et \u00e9tait entr\u00e9 dans une grande fureur lorsqu\u2019il avait appris ce que les Arm\u00e9niens avaient fait. Il avait ordonn\u00e9 de tuer \u00ab Nan\u00eb ga \u00bb. Il en fut de m\u00eame pour \u00ab Oulama Sultan \u00bb, qui s\u2019\u00e9tait rebell\u00e9 en s\u2019alliant aux Turcs et organisa des tueries. On peut voir des grandes pierres tombales sculpt\u00e9es, dat\u00e9es de 1536 et 1538, preuves vivantes de ces barbaries. On rapporte qu\u2019il s\u2019agit des tombes de sept fr\u00e8res, et que tous ont \u00e9t\u00e9 tu\u00e9s avec cruaut\u00e9, apr\u00e8s le paiement d\u2019une ran\u00e7on.
